In 2023, the Bangladesh government launched an ambitious effort to upgrade its national ID card (NID) registration system, spurred by the 'National Identity Registration Act 2023.' Building on the introduction of biometrics in 2016, which included fingerprints, iris scans, and photographs for enhanced NID functionality, this initiative encompassed a series of forward-looking measures. These ranged from shifting registration authority to the Ministry of Home Affairs to assigning Unique National Identity Numbers (NINs) at birth and optimizing the NID application process.
Within these reforms, a central challenge surfaced: deploying high-performance, durable fingerprint devices for capturing ten fingerprints efficiently during smart national ID card issuance. This critical responsibility rested with the Register's Office, a division within the Security Services Division of the Home Affairs Ministry. Addressing this technological upgrade and ensuring the seamless integration of advanced fingerprint devices presented intricate challenges. Efficient deployment and utilization of these devices were pivotal in achieving the broader goal of an enhanced national identification system.

In 2023, Aratek Biometrics joined forces with BMIT Solutions Ltd. to streamline the fingerprint data capture process during Bangladesh National ID card applications. Our primary objective was to deliver an upgraded and dependable solution for the efficient capture of the ten fingerprints required for the smart NID card issuance. To fulfill this mission, we strategically deployed 1,200 Aratek A900 4-4-2 live-scan fingerprint scanners across the nation. We swiftly deployed these devices to registration centers, where operators easily adapted to the user-friendly A900 scanners. The built-in 2.8” LCD screen and speaker provided an intuitive, step-by-step audio-visual walkthrough, streamlining the fingerprint capture process. This guaranteed high-quality enrollment data and significantly enhanced the overall efficiency and integrity of the Bangladesh national identification system.
